This highly illustrate d manual provides practical guidance on structural steelwork detailing. It:
* describes the common structural shapes in use and how they are joined to form members and complete structures
* explains detailing practice and convention s
* provides detailing data for standard sections, bolts and welds
* emphasises the importance of tolerances in order to achieve proper site fit-up
* discusses the important link between good detailing and constructi on costs
Examples of structures include single and multi-storey buildings, towers and bridges. The detailing shown will be suitable in principle for fabricatio n and erection in many countries, and the sizes shown will act as a guide to preliminar y design.
The second edition has been updated to take account of changes to standards, including the revisions to BS5950 and includes a new chapter on computer aided detailing.
Summary: An excellent, but slightly overpriced , manual.
Rating: 4
This book is packed with useful informatio n on structural steel detailing. The authors have taken their time to compile all of the various elements of structural steel detailing, from welding, bolting and corrosion detailing, to lots of very useful tables and worked examples.
But there are two important points to note. Firstly, the authors are British, and thus all of the standards referenced throughout the book are based on British and European standards. Those of you, like me, who are far more familiar with American standards will need to do some extra homework looking up the American *****alent s of the British/European nomenclatu re used throughout the manual. Secondly, given the wealth of informatio n covered in this manual, it should have been at least fifty pages longer. The editing of this book is sometimes very choppy, and it does give the impression that the authors were compelled to edit some topics down to a bare minimum, leaving them with no choice but to try to pack as much useful informatio n as possible into as few paragraphs as possible.
Overall, despite the relatively high sticker price for a paperback book that is only 167 pages long, this manual does a fine job covering detailing principles . I would definitely recommend it to any technician/engineer involved with structural steel.
Summary: a good book for rocket scientists

The basic things, which generally neglected by the Detailer, are explained well.
The typical conn. details & the most useful details are presented with the sketches.
The dimensions , which we can't always keep in our brains, are tabulated very well.
